Defective Airbags Prompt Massive Recall

Owners of nearly 8 million cars and trucks representing ten manufacturers and encompassing model years 2000 through 2007 should be aware of a major recall of multiple models that have airbags made by Takata, a long-time maker of vehicle safety and restraint systems. Servicemembers stationed in the U.S. as well as designated countries overseas should take note of the designated makes and models and seek assistance in obtaining repairs as soon as possible.

Affected manufacturers include BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors (GMC), Honda, Mazda Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota, with Honda numbering over 5 million of the total number recalled. Each maker has several models and model years that are included in the recall announcement so The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at urges owners to act immediately on recall notices and contact their local dealer for replacement airbag installation.

The NHTSA message was issued with great urgency, especially for owners of vehicles affected by regional recalls in the following areas: Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii. It is possible that the high humidity levels in these locations are to blame for the increased likelihood that the airbag inflators may explode and disperse metal fragments into the vehicle interior. According to Car and Driver magazine, this is the third and largest recall for the same airbag problem since April 2013 so it is likely additional vehicles may be announced at a later date.

If replacement parts are not readily available, dealers will temporarily disable passenger-side airbags and install a visible glove-box tag noting the airbag is non-functional and serving as a reminder to get the repair made when parts do become available. All necessary repairs relevant to the recall will be made free of charge – so don’t delay contacting your dealer to get your vehicle fixed at the earliest possible date!
