Mike leads the USAA Educational Foundation Operations and Risk program for the USAA Educational Foundation as it serves its mission as the leader in providing personal finance education to the military.
He joined USAA in 2016 and brings over 30 years of experience in operations, risk management and leadership. Prior to this role he led Business Risk and Control functions for USAA’s P&C group where he was responsible for risk monitoring and reporting. Before his leadership in P&C, Mike spent over five years in Corporate Communications as an Executive Operational Planning Manager, Operations Director and interim AVP Strategy and Operations.
Prior to joining USAA in 2016, Mike served over 22 years in the United States Navy. During that time he served as a Surface Warfare Officer completing tours on seven different ship classes in roles such as Submarine Warfare Officer, Operations Officer, C5I Officer (Communications, Combat Systems, Command, Control Computers and Information) and Executive Officer. On shore duty he served as an Operational Test Director, Acquisitions Advisor and he finished his military service as Commanding Officer of Naval Recruiting District San Antonio.
Mike previously served on the Board of Directors for Seton Home and supports transitioning veterans/spouses by volunteering as a mentor with American Corporate Partners. He and his wife Sonya spend their free time working out, watching movies and attending various sports and orchestra events in support of their children Mikayla, Mishaila and Michael Jr.
Mike graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, earned an Executive MBA from the Naval Postgraduate School and has a Master’s in Enterprise Risk Management from Columbia University.
