Each year on MilSpouse Appreciation Day, we take time to recognize the strength, sacrifice and resilience of military spouses. From frequent moves to holding down the financial fort, military spouses are the backbone of military families. As a proud military spouse myself, I know firsthand the challenges and triumphs of this unique lifestyle – especially when it comes to managing family finances.

The Hidden Role of Military Spouses: Family CFOs

In many military families, the spouse is managing the budget, paying the bills, planning for the future, and finding creative ways to make ends meet through each military move, deployment and career transition. It’s not just a “chore”, it’s a vital leadership role that keeps our military households strong and stable.

Behind every plan and paycheck there’s a hundred small decisions that keep a family strong. These essential financial skills are often caught not taught. We often learn by doing – searching unfamiliar terms, calling TRICARE or DFAS for the third time this week, or figuring out how to file taxes from a new duty station. But the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone! The military community is a strong network of support, and we’ve curated a few helpful resources to share and support military spouses everywhere.
